About the Artist

Karen Bartlett - Biography

My Journey

I grew up sitting in my father’s studio watching him paint, absorbing little nuggets of artistic wisdom along the way. I spent a lot of time looking through his art books and was more curious about the stories behind the art, than the art itself.  I was especially drawn to artists like Andrew Wyeth, Sargent, Whistler and Klimt and the mystery their art holds. I'm captivated by melancholy portraiture, quiet barren landscapes and how the simple use of line and color can evoke our emotions. My art is for those, like me, that find tranquility and contentment in this space.

I work mostly in oil using thin glazes, large soft brushes, knives, charcoal, cloth, scrapers, rollers, and anything else I can find to scratch, wipe and bend the paint to achieve the atmosphere and mood I'm searching for. I’ve never had much formal training and just started my art business after losing my job two years ago.  After spending 30 years in the Advertising world I decided this was the time.

Lake Stories

Exhale and welcome to “Lake Stories”. It’s a world I’ve created for those of us that are searching for solace in our everyday lives, for those that find comfort and beauty in dark skies, thunderstorms, desolate shorelines and foggy, rainy days. I’m drawn to these images and seek to recreate these feelings in my lakescapes. "Lake Stories" was inspired by the constantly shifting light and it's changing reflection on the lakes and streams that surround me. My hope is that you’ll feel the cool breeze, the hot sun, the wet sand or the bite of a cold winters day. Each piece tells its own story -  a painting isn’t finished until I’m able to feel it.

Thank you for sharing my journey – so glad you’re here.
